Planning Your Honeymoon - Honeymoon Ideas

Honeymoon planning is much simpler if you write down your preferences in order of location, budget, activities and amenities. Begin honeymoon planning early to take advantage of early-booking incentives.

Whether its because of cost, timing, or some other issue, not all newlyweds choose to go on a honeymoon. But if you can, do it. After all the stress and work of planning your wedding and the hoopla of the big day itself you'll need some time away to recover. While honeymoons sometimes become an afterthought to wedding planning, it's wise to begin your honeymoon planning early so you can take advantage of early-booking incentives.

Here are a few tips to help you plan a honeymoon to remember:

1.  Start saving early. Even if you don't decide on a destination until later, add 'honeymoon expense' to your list. If you don't work it into your savings from the start you may wind up short in the end.

2.  Take the time to sit down with your significant other and discuss possible honeymoon destinations. Yes, Hawaii's great, but it's a big world out there with many wonderful honeymoon destinations to choose from. Make sure you are both on the same page when it comes to preferred destinations. And, when it comes to finalizing honeymoon destinations, you might find it simpler to write down your choices in order oflocation, budget, activities and amenities.

3.  Watch out for the weather in your preferred destination. The Caribbean is beautiful, but it can be risky during hurricane season. You may want to go for an island like Aruba, which is south of the hurricane belt.

4.  Use a travel agent. They can usually get the best packages and you have enough to plan for the wedding without having to worry about comparing hotel rates and coordinating flights.

5.  If money is tight, why not consider setting up a Honeymoon Registry where friends and family can contribut to your honeymoon? Some honeymoon registries allow you to choose destinations and allow people to contribute all or a portion to things like hotel costs, airfare, massages, candlelight dinner, cruises, etc. Setting up a honeymoon registry ahead of time also allows you to know what costs you'll have to cover. Some honeymoon registry sites include:

honeymoonwishes.com
thehoneymoon.com
thebigday.com
honeyluna.com

6.  Again, if money is tight, you may want to consider an intimate destination wedding, which can be your wedding and honeymoon all in one.

7.  If you are traveling out of the country make sure your passports are current. If they're not, or you don't have one, make sure to apply or renew yours months ahead of leaving for your honeymoon, as the backlog of passport applications can increase the time it takes to receive your passport. For peace of mind, spend the extra money to expedite your passport request. Also, familiarize yourself with local laws and determine if you need any additional paperwork.

8.  Take extra spending cash with you. If you plan on using your credit card on your honeymoon, do alert your credit card company you'll be using your card in an out-of-town location so there will be no danger of your card being declined while on your honeymoon.

9. Don't overdo it. While activities and sightseeing can be fun, be sure to reserve some open time in your schedule for sitting back and relaxing.
