From the Proposal to the Honeymoon
Cheap Engagement Ring - Quality to fit your budget
While some may scoff at the idea of purchasing a cheap engagement ring (and by cheap, we mean “inexpensive,” not cheaply made), there’s no scoffing at the savings that can be had by choosing the engagement ring with a budget in mind. The money saved can be added to savings that will someday help finance your house, or even your future children’s college education. When it comes to money spent on your engagement ring, let your own budget be the deciding factor, not some set of customs or “rules.”

Save Money By Going Smaller

While you can buy a 2.45 ctw diamond engagement ring from $10,000 to $30,000, you can also find one for under $1,000 if you go for a smaller size, say a 1/4 ctw diamond. And, if you buy a smaller size at a "big box" discount chain, you can find one for under $300.

Save Money By Shopping at Low-Priced Chain Discount Stores

While they may have more status, small jewelry stores often offer wedding rings at higher prices for a comparable ring you'd find at a chain discount store. If you want a new diamond engagement ring at a discount price, you may want to check the following discount chains:

  • Costco
  • K-mart
  • Target
  • Walmart
  • JCPenney
As far as prices go, Target appears to be the cheapest, followed by K-mart, then Walmart and then Costco. Please note that Costco is a membership-only store, meaning you have to buy a membership to shop there. If you don't mind shopping online, another lower-priced alternative is Overstock.com, which carries all different kinds of merchandise, including engagement and wedding rings at substantial savings.

Go for a Cubic Zirconia or Moissanite Ring

Want an even cheaper alternative? You may want to consider synthetics such as cubic zirconia or synthetic moissanite, which look very similar to diamonds. You can find cubic zirconia at the above discount chains, and synthetic moissanite at JCPenney and online store Buy.com.

Which one should you choose? Well, that's entirely up to you. Cubic zirconia (cz as it is known) is the cheapest, while Moissanite is more durable, and some believe, more brilliant than a cubic zirconia (cz). If you have to be super frugal, you may want to go with a cubic zirconia. If you want something that's more durable and more brilliant, then you might want to choose a moissanite ring.

Go for a Used Engagement Ring or an Antique Ring

If you still want diamonds and still want something that's above-average in quality, you may want to consider purchasing an antique ring or a used ring that's not an antique. You can find formerly-expensive rings at places like:

  • eBay
  • Pawn Shops
  • Antique Stores
  • Classified Ads
  • Craigslist
  • Estate Sales
Tips for Saving Money on an Engagement Ring

The following tips can apply whether you are purchasing a new, used or antique ring, or even a diamond simulate ring such as cubic zirconia or moissanite.

Plan your purchase ahead of time. Decide how you're going to pay for the ring before you start going shopping. This could take a little bit of time or a long time. For example, if you decide to pay cash for your purchase, you're either going to have to save the money or take the money out of a bank account. Remember, if you pay in cash, you often have more bargaining power.

Don't buy at the first place you look. Do your homework! Shop around. With the amount of information available on the internet, comparison shopping has been taken to a whole new level.

Don't be afraid to negotiate. You'd be amazed at how many people will go lower in price - even at major chains! The key is to make sure you learn the price of the type of ring you want. Once you've narrowed down your selection and you've selected a vendor, the last remaining task that you are going to have to do is to negotiate the best possible price for the piece that you want.  You will want to make sure that you visit different websites or sources to get to know the real value of the ring you want. Doing this will save you hundreds or thousands of dollars!
